As a psychiatrist serving people throughout Augusta County, VA, we know many of our patients deal with the reality of anxiety. Whether you suffer from social anxiety, generalized anxiety, panic attacks, or anything in between, you should not feel like you’re alone. With that in mind, here are 3 tips to deal with anxiety.

1. Break Big Problems Into Small Tasks

When you have a bunch of work to do or problems to solve, it can be really overwhelming. That’s why it’s important to break down these projects into small tasks. For everything you have to do, break it down into small goals that are reasonable. Even write it down on a list so you can check off each one.

2. Find Ways to Calm Down

It sounds overly simple, but if you’re feeling overcome by anxiety, it’s important to take time to breathe. Just take a second, focus on your breathing, and relax until the feelings subside. If that doesn’t work for you, investigate what you need to calm down in a stressful situation. Think: Is it a cup of tea? Is it making a list of what I accomplished? Is it playing a short video game? Figure out what works for you and use it.

3. Accept Your Anxiety and Seek Treatment

Anxiety is incredibly common. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America,

“Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18.1% of the population every year.”
