Beyond seeing a psychiatrist in Augusta County, VA, there are a lot of things you can do to take care of yourself better. In combination with treatment in practice like Shenandoah Psychiatric Medicine, it’s important to work self care into your life. It can be daunting coming up with a self care routine though. With that in mind, here are 3 easy ways to take better care of yourself.

1. Active Listen to Yourself

As Toni Bernhard, J.D., asserts in Psychology Today,

“My favorite self-care strategy is based on Active Listening, where you feed back to others their emotional pain by restating it in your own words, so that they feel heard and understood. My twist is that I Active Listen to myself: I craft a phrase that addresses specifically the difficulty of the moment, and then I speak it silently or softly to myself”

That means you should tell yourself what your emotional pain is and assert to yourself that this feeling you have here is valid. You can from there probe into that pain point and determine why you feel this way. Then, you can take actions to alleviate it.

2. Prioritize What You Need

Think about what you need, whether that falls on Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs or it’s just something that makes you feel good, do that. Something simple like drinking tea and listening to podcasts or making sure you get that morning run in can make sure that you stay in a better mental state. To determine if you’re taking good care of yourself, the Oregon State University has a great self care evaluation to take. It also can give you some good ideas to work into your daily routine.

3. Make Lists

As Mark Twain once said,

“Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.”

Of course, that’s not to be taken literally. The concept is that if you conquer one big task at the beginning of the day, the rest of the day will be easy. In practice, the best way to accomplish this is to make a to do list at the beginning of every day. Make a list of one hard task you have to complete and then other little tasks you can accomplish. By being able to cross all of these frogs off your list, you’ll have a tangible reason to do all of these tasks. Next thing you know, you’re getting more stuff done.
