While you can’t make more money magically appear, you can budget so that you can make the most of the money that you do have coming in. A clear budget can also manage your spending expectations and help to alleviate some of the stress that you may be feeling about money and bills. So, here are some budgeting tips:

  • Take a month or two to track your expenses, including bills, groceries, etc. Don’t forget to include the amount of money that you spend on additional things like eating out, shopping, etc. 
  • When you create a budget, first account for all of the necessary expenditures, such as your utilities, rent/mortgage, health insurance, etc. From there you’ll also want to budget for pleasure spending (such as those date nights, etc.). 
  • Be realistic about your spending. If you budget for $500 for groceries, but you know that you typically spend $800, you’ll likely just find yourself frustrated when you see your budget coming up short each month.
  • Find small ways to save, such as apps that help you save on gas, or coupons while you grocery shop. 
  • Any money that you save each month should be put into savings for a rainy day.
  • Try to set aside money each month for emergency situations, because you never know when your car is going to break down or you’ll have an unexpected medical expense. Putting aside a little money each month will help you in the future when those expenditures come up.
  • If you share finances with a spouse, be sure to talk with them about a budget and make sure that you’re on the same page.
  • Find a credit card that offers rewards, such as flight points. However, be sure to pay off your credit card as you spend money, or else you’ll end up accruing interest and not helping yourself in the long run.
