While the beginning of the school year can be an exciting time, it can also be overwhelming and stressful– for both parents and kids alike. Before the school year begins, it’s important to get back into your school routine to help ensure a smooth start. To do this, you can begin to follow your school schedule a few weeks before school actually starts; this means that you’ll follow your school year bedtime, wake up when you would during the school year, and eat your meals when you would during the school year as well.

If you have a little one starting school for the first time, begin to teach them skills to help them be more independent, such as tying their own shoes, opening packaged items from their lunch box, and getting themselves dressed. You can also work on helping them to remember important information like their home address.

Once the school year begins, it’s important to stick to a routine. Have a set time for your children to do their homework when they get home, aim to have dinner around the same time each night, and have a bedtime routine to help the transition to get to sleep go more smoothly.

Taking the time to relax from school is also important, so be sure to plan family activities like family movie night, game nights, or even just an hour at the local playground to bond and unwind.

The school year is almost here, and we hope it’s a great one! For psychiatrists in the Augusta County, VA area, give us a call at Shenandoah Psychiatric Medicine.
