This time of year many people are making New Year’s resolutions for 2022. Well these resolutions typically start with the best of intentions, they often lead to stress and disappointment for many people. This is for several reasons: for one, people often feel pressured to make a resolution because it’s what’s expected; without personal motivation, resolutions can fall flat and get abandoned within a short period of time. Another reason that people are unsuccessful with their resolutions is because they set lofty, unrealistic goals. Instead, make small attainable goals, and plan practical, concrete steps to achieve those goals.

If you want to make a New Year’s resolution this year, choose one that will enhance your life rather than adding extra stress to it. For example, if you hate reading, don’t say that you’re going to read 50 books this year. Instead, resolve that you’re going to try to find an author that you really enjoy this year. If you want to plan to exercise more this year, start with a smaller goal  like that you’ll work out for 30 minutes 3 times a week, and then work your way up from there.

Additionally, remember that no one says that you have to or need to set a New Year’s resolution. If it’s something that you do because it’s something that you’ve always done, but it’s also something that brings you stress or disappointment, then stop making these resolutions.

New Year’s resolutions can be a great way to make positive changes in your life, but they can also lead to abandoned goals and dreams. So, remember that you should create a resolution only if you feel personally led to and not because of some tired tradition. If you do decide to create a resolution, plan out steps that will help you reach that goal. And lastly, give yourself some grace and remember that you will have setbacks and delays, and that’s okay!

This year, make your mental well-being a priority, and call the psychiatrists at Shenandoah Psychiatric Medicine in Augusta County, VA.
