Spring is in full swing, and before you know it, summer will be here. While summer can be a fun time with the warm weather, family vacations, and trips to the pool, it can also be a stressful time, especially if you have school-aged children.
Without the structure of school, kids can begin to get restless. It’s important to keep them busy with engaging and fun activities, but that’s not always easy, especially if you are still working over the summer, like most of the adult population. So, here are some fun, simple summer activities for your family:
- Grow a garden! Create a small garden in your backyard, filled with flowers and/or vegetables. Then, task your children with chores to keep the garden in shape, such as watering the plants and pulling weeds. This can be a fun activity to keep them occupied throughout the summer, and they get to enjoy the fruits of their labor as their garden grows! In addition, sunshine and working in the soil both can boost serotonin levels, leading to a nice and natural mood boost. It’s really a win-win situation.
- Create a backyard water park. Use a small plastic kiddie pool, your water hose, a sprinkler, or any number of items you have around the home to create your own backyard water park. This is a lot cheaper than heading to those expensive water parks, and you can even include your family’s furry friends in the water park fun!
- Paint rocks and leave them in your neighborhood or in local parks. This can encourage your children’s creativity and also encourage them to get outside. You can even get other neighborhood kids involved, and your neighborhood could be full of beautiful painted rocks that the kids can search for and exchange.
- Go on a picnic! Everyone has to eat, right? Well, take your lunch or dinner out into the yard and enjoy it on a blanket, or head to the local park and eat on their picnic tables. Just a simple change of scenery can liven up your children’s schedule.
These are just a few fun, simple, and inexpensive ideas to help keep your kids entertained this summer (and hopefully keep you as stress-free as possible).
